"My recent small sculptures in wooden spheres, boxes and cones are a direct extension of collaborations in natural materials carried out with my wife, sculptor Rebecca Davis, over the past 14 years. In our sculpture we attempt to introduce a state of bafflement about a particular material by altering it so it becomes something new. Instead of your mind telling your eyes what they are seeing, it is asking, "What is this?". Then you are really looking.
Much of our work has consisted of precisely ordered arrangements of sticks, poles, sand, stones, logs or boulders, set up as temporary indoor or outdoor installations. In recent years we have created a series of objects loosely based on the crisscrossing stick patterns in nature-nests, log jams, beaver dams, pack-rat middens."
